Nikola Jokic makes more history as Nuggets extend win steak

Still the most dominant player in the world, Nikola Jokic put up another historic performance on Monday night. Jokic accomplished something that's been a rarity in the NBA for decades in the Denver Nuggets' 137-132 win over the Portland Trail Blazers.

While Jokic is lower down on the list of MVP candidates this season, mostly due to missing a month's worth of action with an injury, he's been showing his dominance and making his case as still being the league's top player recently.

Nikola Jokic joined some elite company with his latest dominating performance

In fact, Jokic posted numbers that few have been able to produce as often, scoring 35 points in 43 minutes and also adding 14 rebounds, 13 assists and five steals. Jokic became the just the fourth player with multiple games with at least 35 points, 10 boards, 10 assists and five steals since the 1973-74 season.

And the only other players to record a game like that over that timespan are legends Michael Jordan, Hakeem Olajuwon and future Hall of Famer James Harden.

With Jokic at his best, the Nuggets have now won nine games in a row and hold a 51-28 record. Denver's win streak has propelled the Nuggets to their new position as the Western Conference's No. 3 seed, moving the Los Angeles Lakers down to fourth.

Jokic is averaging a triple-double for the season for the second year in a row

In 63 games played, Jokic is averaging 28.0 points, 12.9 rebounds and 10.9 assists while shooting 56.8 percent from the field. If his statistics hold, Jokic would finish with an average of a triple-double in consecutive seasons.

Regardless how many MVP votes Jokic receives - he's already won the award three times - or how much recognition he earns, the Nuggets could be poised for a deep postseason run if he continues playing at such a high level. And capturing his second NBA title would provide him with the most important trophy of all.
