Victor Wembanyama has bold take on his DPOY odds

Victor Wembanyama is not modest about his expectations for an end-of-season award haul.

The San Antonio Spurs center was asked if he would be surprised if he did not win Defensive Player of the Year honors unanimously at the end of the season, and Wembanyama did not mince words.

“Yes, I would,” Wembanyama said.

“Yes, I would.”

Wembanyama even asked about who the other frontrunners are, suggesting he is not all that worried about the competition. He is justified in feeling that way, as he is seen as an overwhelming favorite to win the award.

Wembanyama does have a real chance to win the award unanimously, though the likes of Chet Holmgren or Rudy Gobert could peel off some votes. Of course, he has his eyes on more prestigious hardware, though he is not nearly as likely to receive that one as he is DPOY honors.

The confidence is earned, as Wembanyama has a good argument for being the game’s most impactful defensive player. He leads the league with 3.1 blocks per game to go with 11.5 rebounds per game on the season.
