Shortly after it was learned this past winter that New York Giants head coach John Harbaugh would be reporting directly to team co-owner John Mara and not to general manager Joe Schoen, reports revealed that it was "expected" that Schoen would sign a contract extension at some point after the 2026 NFL Draft wraps up.
However, Schoen remains in the final year of his deal heading into Tuesday's predraft news conference. According to Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News, it sounds like Schoen may not be part of the Harbaugh-led regime when the upcoming season gets underway in September.
"A few league sources speculate that 'Schoen could be done after the draft,' as they bluntly put it in conversations with the Daily News," Leonard shared for a piece published on Monday.
Both new Giants senior vice president of football operations and strategy Dawn Aponte and Schoen report to Harbaugh. Per Leonard, "no one has a firm, 100% read on whether Schoen will stick around or be shown the door – or on exactly when Harbaugh would make that change if and when he does."
It's believed Schoen held onto his job through April so that he could run the team's scouting staff leading up to the draft. Once the player-selection process ends on April 25, the Giants may no longer need his services.
While the 2022 Giants made the playoffs and notched a postseason win in Schoen's first campaign with the organization, the club more recently went 13-38 under the executive's leadership. Brian Daboll, Schoen's hand-picked head coach, was fired during the 2025 campaign. Schoen has clearly lost power within the organization since the hiring of Harbaugh.
"Perhaps Schoen’s good relationship with some of the Giants’ ownership, including director of player personnel Tim McDonnell, will buy him a long-term job behind Harbaugh’s scenes in the GM’s new and reduced role," Leonard added.
In short, it could be interesting to hear what Harbaugh has to say about Schoen's status before the draft begins on the night of April 23.
