Huge Carlos Mendoza job-security update revealed amid Mets' losing streak

What was once a 7-4 New York Mets side fell to 7-11 on the season via a frustrating 2-1 loss at the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday night. 

Some have wondered if Mets manager Carlos Mendoza is on the hot seat, considering how poorly his club has played since last summer. On Wednesday, Will Sammon of The Athletic delivered a clear answer to any and all Mendoza-related job-security questions. 

How close is Carlos Mendoza to losing his job?

"Mendoza is not in danger of losing his job at this point," Sammon directly said. "And it would take a lot more for that to change."

Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns dismantled and then restructured the core of the club's roster this past offseason. Stearns understandably has received criticism from frustrated fans for the fact that the Mets have scored just 10 total runs during their seven-game losing streak. 

That said, Stearns couldn't have guessed that Juan Soto would go down with a right calf strain on April 3 that could keep the star outfielder out of the lineup through at least part of next week. 

Carlos Mendoza seems to have support from noteworthy Mets people

Early Wednesday morning, big-spending Mets owner Steve Cohen took to X and expressed confidence that the club will soon "turn this around." It appears Cohen isn't the only member of the Mets who still has faith in Mendoza this spring. 

"He has handled this year’s challenges fairly well, according to veteran players granted anonymity in exchange for their candor," Sammon added about Mendoza. "It is not an easy situation. New York went beyond overhauling its roster. Nearly Mendoza’s entire coaching staff turned over, too." 

That's all well and good, but concerned Mets fans may point out that the current squad isn't playing much better than the team that ended June 12 of last year with a record of 45-24 but then failed to qualify for the playoffs.  

"Outside of a drastic change in approach or personality," Sammon wrote, "it would be very surprising if the Mets end up moving on from Mendoza soon."

It remains to be seen how many more losses could change that definition of "soon" for the last-place club.
