The youth are getting paid.
On Wednesday, Detroit Tigers third baseman and shortstop Kevin McGonigle, 21, became the latest MLB rookie to sign a lucrative extension. Per USA Today MLB insider Bob Nightengale, the league's No. 2-ranked prospect signed an eight-year, $150M contract, joining a growing list of rising stars to ink long-term deals.
McGonigle wasted no time acclimating himself to the majors, going 4-for-5 with two doubles in his big-league debut on Mar. 26. Through 17 games, the 2023 first-round pick (No. 37 overall) has a .311/.417/.492 slash line with as many extra-base hits as strikeouts (eight).
His deal includes a $14M signing bonus, the second-largest for a pre-arbitration signing, per Spotrac data, only trailing the $15M signing bonus Seattle Mariners centerfielder Julio Rodriguez received in 2022.

2027: $1M
2028: $7M
2029: $16M
2030: $21M
2031: $22M
2032: $23M ($25M if reaches escalators)
2033: $23M ($26M if reaches escalators

$5M if traded each time.
The Tigers were wise to finalize an extension with McGonigle early in the season, positioning him as a franchise cornerstone well into the 2030s. Based on his early production, his price tag won't be getting any cheaper.
McGonigle's signing follows others by prospects including Seattle Mariners shortstop Colt Emerson, 20, and Pittsburgh Pirates shortstop Konnor Griffin, 19. In March, Emerson and the Mariners agreed to an eight-year, $95M extension. Griffin recently signed a mammoth nine-year, $140M contract with the Pirates. Chicago Cubs centerfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong, 24, also recently avoided pre-arbitration with a six-year, $115M contract.
As the Tigers deal with uncertainty surrounding two-time Cy Young Award-winning starting pitcher Tarik Skubal's future beyond this season, they at least know McGonigle is under team control for the foreseeable future. Based on his strong first impression, it's a deal Detroit should benefit from for seasons to come.
