Boston Red Sox All-Star Jarren Duran starred in yet another controversial incident on Tuesday night.
After grounding out midway through a 6-0 road loss to the Minnesota Twins, Duran was seen flipping off a local fan.
It didn't take long for the clip to go viral on social media, and he faced serious backlash.
Following the game, Duran revealed that, even though he shouldn't have let the fan get in his head, the obscene gesture was in response to him crossing a delicate line.
“Somebody told me to kill myself,” Duran said, per Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic. “I’m used to it at this point. (Expletive) happens. I’m going to flip somebody off if they say something to me. It is what it is. I shouldn’t react like that, but that stuff is still kind of triggering. It happens.”
It should go without saying that no one should tell anybody to kill themselves. Moreover, just last year, Duran admitted that he had some serious struggles with mental health and even thought about doing so, so this was even more serious for him.
Some friendly banter and trash-talk here and there is acceptable; it even spices things up a bit, but there's a line.
Duran shouldn't have reacted that way, but the fan doesn't have the right to tell him that just because he paid for a ticket. Athletes are human beings, just like the rest of us.
Given the serious nature of these accusations, the Twins will likely investigate the incident and may even take measures against the fan.
Regardless, it just wasn't a good look for anyone.
