76ers rookie VJ Edgecombe shows no fear in postseason debut

Twenty-year-old VJ Edgecombe played his first NBA postseason game Wednesday night for the Philadelphia 76ers. He looked like an experienced veteran in the Sixers' 109-97 win over the Orlando Magic.

Edgecombe scored 19 points and collected 11 rebounds in the win, playing with confidence in a physical battle. At times, he showed too much confidence, drawing a second-half technical, but he remained a perfect sidekick to Tyrese Maxey (31 points).

VJ Edgecombe revitalized the Philadelphia 76ers this season

In 2024, the 76ers thought they'd built a contender by signing Paul George and extending Maxey and Joel Embiid. Injuries to all three landed Philadelphia in the lottery, where they picked Edgecombe with the No. 3 pick.

He's been essential for the Sixers, averaging 16 points, 5.6 rebounds and 4.2 assists, along with 1.5 steals and 0.5 blocks. Only Maxey played more minutes than Edgecombe during a year where George got a drug suspension, Kelly Oubre battled injuries, Maxey got hurt late and Jared McCain was traded.

The Magic weren't ready for Edgecombe's speed and athleticism on a night where his three-point shot wasn't falling (1-for-5), so he relentlessly attacked the hoop.

VJ Edgecombe played tough in the 76ers' win

While Edgecombe's scoring was no surprise, his rebounding effort was unexpected. He racked up 11 defensive rebounds, crucial against a Magic team that starts three 6-foot-10 players and brings 6-foot-11 Goga Bitadze off the bench.

In a game full of hard fouls and physical play, Edgecombe didn't let the Magic's aggressive defense rattle him. In fact, he took it to All-Defensive guard Jalen Suggs, scoring on him and then walking him into the basket stanchion, earning a technical foul.

That wasn't a smart decision by Edgecombe, but it demonstrated that, rookie or not, he isn't backing down in big games. He'll need all that confidence when the Sixers face the Boston Celtics in the first round, but don't expect Edgecombe to look intimidated.
