Mets continue to make worrisome admissions as losing streak grows

Members of the New York Mets previously admitted that they could be pressing at the plate and were "frustrated" amid a losing streak that saw the club go from 7-4 to 7-11.

That was before the Mets' skid reached eight contests after their 8-2 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday night. Following that defeat, Mets players suggested that they didn't know how to stop the bleeding at this early stage of the season.

Mets have no answer for ending losing streak?

"I don’t really wrap my mind around it," Mets third baseman Bo Bichette said, per Phillip Martinez of SNY. "It’s tough right now. If we knew the answer, we’d do it. But we’ll keep working to try and figure it out."

The Mets scored just 12 total runs over their past eight contests with star outfielder Juan Soto sidelined due to the right calf strain he suffered on April 3. According to Phillip Martinez of SNY, Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said ahead of Wednesday's defeat that Soto is on track to return "at some point in the next homestand."

Before that homestand begins, the Mets will play three games at the Chicago Cubs (9-9) this weekend.

"It’s baseball," Mets starting pitcher Clay Holmes added. "If we had an answer, we definitely don’t want to be in this spot. It’s one of those things you go in those stretches where it’s tough. There’s no pointing fingers. Everyone has to take it upon themself to help the team win."

Carlos Mendoza has one hope for Thursday

Before the Mets begin their series at Wrigley Field on Friday afternoon (2:20 p.m. ET), they will be off on Thursday. Mendoza seems to hope that the break will give his squad a bit of a chance to reset.

"We’re not playing good baseball right now," Mendoza acknowledged. "Everybody’s frustrated. We gotta use the off day [Thursday] to regroup and get back at it because we gotta get going here. It’s not a good showing right now."

A Wednesday report insisted that "Mendoza is not in danger of losing his job at this point." It's unclear how far the "this point" part of that story will extend if the Mets don't quickly turn things around.

"They’re p—. Frustrated. Not happy about it," Mendoza said about how his team is handling playing last-place baseball. "I want them to be p—."

Thus far, that anger hasn't resulted in the Mets producing wins since April 7.
