Jordan Walker may have been on his last chance to prove himself with the St. Louis Cardinals.
Walker had struggled after a promising rookie season in 2023, posting a .211/.270/.324 batting line with 11 homers and 23 doubles in 574 plate appearances between 2024 and 2025. He was one of the worst players in the majors last season, with his -1.2 fWAR the sixth-worst mark among major league players.
Despite those struggles, Walker was given another opportunity heading into the 2026 season. The rebuilding Cardinals had opened spots in the lineup for Walker and infielder Nolan Gorman, giving them a chance to prove that they can be part of the future.
Walker has seized that opportunity and run with it thus far. He has a .315/.375/.685 batting line in his 80 plate appearances entering Saturday, hitting a major league-leading eight homers and three doubles. He has been worth 1.2 fWAR already, erasing his negative value from 2025 in just 19 games.
There are some red flags with Walker's performance. His 28.8% strikeout rate is above league average, and his .357 batting average on balls in play may not be sustainable. However, Walker is drawing walks at a career-best 8.8% rate, and his Statcast page is a sea of red. If he can cut down on the strikeouts and improve his chase rate, he could live up to the potential that made him a consensus top-10 prospect ahead of the 2023 season.
Walker has erased his dreadful 2025 season in just 19 games. If he can keep up this pace, he could emerge as a cornerstone for the Cardinals as they continue their rebuilding process.
