The Dallas Cowboys are staring at a major George Pickens problem right now.
In the best-case scenario, he's going to play under the franchise tag and return to square zero next offseason, but that seems unlikely.
So, they will either have to pay more than they want to keep him, or they'll engage in another back-and-forth, months-long saga that will probably end with him getting traded.
Despite the stalemate, Dak Prescott is putting in the work with his teammate while Pickens' agent handles the bargaining.
“We’re just working, no different than I have any offseason,” Prescott said during the Children’s Cancer Fund anniversary gala, per The Athletic's Jon Machota. “Obviously, first real offseason with George being a part of it, and he’s showed up and been active, has looked great. So super excited, leaving all that, those contract talks and that off to the front office.”
That might seem minor, but it isn't. Of course, teammates work out together in the offseason all the time, but this is another way to let him know he's appreciated and wanted there.
Prescott and Pickens developed instant chemistry last season, and spending a full offseason together is certainly promising for year two.
However, the Cowboys still need to figure out the best course of action with Pickens.
Also, with $60M a year committed to Prescott and fellow WR CeeDee Lamb, they might not be willing/able to give up nearly $30M more to keep Pickens in town for the long run.
So far, there have been no takers in a hypothetical trade, so Pickens may not have as much leverage as he thought he'd had. That said, it can all change after the NFL Draft and when the July 15 deadline to reach a new deal approaches.
