Adam Silver may have revealed LeBron James' plans for next season

LeBron James will close his 23rd NBA season with an opportunity to keep stacking the bricks of an almost flawless résumé.

The 41-year-old has been given the gargantuan challenge of leading the Los Angeles Lakers past Kevin Durant and the Houston Rockets without Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves by his side.

James will be a free agent at the end of the season, so this may not only be his final series dressed in Purple & Gold; it might be his final series, period.

However, in a sit-down with sports anchor Craig Carton, NBA commissioner Adam Silver dismissed the notion of retirement, stating that James plans to run it back for at least another season.

Adam Silver says LeBron James isn’t retiring yet

“Yeah, but he — no, I haven’t talked to him since the season ended. I mean, I have every indication that he plans to keep playing next season,” Silver said

James will have several options to consider if he wants to continue playing. A return to the Lakers seemed unlikely earlier in the season, but that should be in the cards if other teams aren’t willing/able to meet his projected financial aspirations.

Of course, the Lakers will prioritize keeping Reaves in town, given that he’s also likely to opt out of his contract to pursue a more lucrative opportunity.

He’s also been tied to the likes of the Golden State Warriors, Los Angeles Clippers, and — unsurprisingly — the Cleveland Cavaliers, but again, he’d have to play ball and agree to take a pay cut for that to happen.

Whatever the case, it looks like James isn’t ready to call it quits. Whether he announces the 2026-27 campaign will be his final year in the league remains to be seen, but even if he doesn’t, teams and fans will probably approach it as his farewell tour.

Even so, he just averaged 20.9 points, 7.2 assists, 6.1 rebounds, 1.2 steals and 1.3 three-pointers per game on 51.5% from the field and 31.7% from beyond the arc across 60 games in his 23rd year, so who’s to say he can’t keep this going for a little longer?
