Phillies to get ace Zack Wheeler back when needed most

The Philadelphia Phillies have been one of the biggest disappointments in MLB thus far in 2026. A key part of the rotation may be returning when they need him most.

Charlotte Varnes of The Athletic reported that pitcher Zack Wheeler will return to the Phillies rotation on Saturday against the Braves. He will slot between Andrew Painter and Aaron Nola for the time being.

Wheeler had been in the midst of a Cy Young caliber season in 2025 before he was sidelined with venous thoracic outlet syndrome. He posted a 2.71 ERA and a 0.935 WHiP over his 149.2 innings, striking out 195 batters with 33 walks.

Philadelphia Phillies need Zack Wheeler to stabilize rotation

The Phillies rotation has struggled without Wheeler. Although Cristopher Sanchez has continued to be a solid top-of-the-rotation starter, he is the only starter who has been above average this season. Jesus Luzardo and Taijuan Walker have been particularly dreadful, posting a 7.94 ERA and a 9.16 ERA, respectively.

Although Wheeler built up to 77 pitches during his rehab assignment, he struggled during his time between Double-A and Triple-A. He posted a 5.85 ERA and a 1.200 WHiP in his 20 innings, striking out 23 batters with five walks.

The Phillies entered Tuesday with an 8-14 record, fourth in the NL East. Although pennants are not won in April, they can be lost in the first few weeks of the season. Wheeler may be making his debut right as the Phillies need him most.
