VJ Edgecombe's historic performance helps 76ers respond from Game 1 dud in win over Celtics

After looking like a team that stood little chance against the Boston Celtics in a lackluster Game 1 performance on Sunday, the Philadelphia 76ers evened the series at one game apiece on Tuesday.

The 111-97 win was all made possible by rookie VJ Edgecombe's heroics. He had a team-high 30 points (12-of-20 FG, 6-of-10 3PT) and 10 rebounds as Philadelphia closed the game on a 20-8 run to turn a two-point lead with under six minutes remaining into a 14-point win.

Guard Tyrese Maxey added 29 points (11-of-28 FG, 5-of-12 3PT) and nine assists, but Edgecombe continues to thrive in his first postseason run. Look no further than the play-in win over the Orlando Magic when he played like an experienced veteran in Joel Embiid's absence.

VJ Edgecombe goes off in shocking Game 2 win for 76ers

According to the NBA's X account, Edgecombe is the youngest player in league history with at least 30 points and 10 rebounds in a postseason game.

Edgecombe's 30 points are also the third-most by a 76ers rookie in a playoff game, per NBC Sports Philadelphia's John Clark, only behind Andrew Toney and Mo Cheeks. His historic outing did not stop there.

According to ESPN Insights, Edgecombe is the first rookie with five threes and 10 rebounds in a playoff game in NBA history. Furthermore, he is the first rookie with a 30-point double-double in a playoff game since Derrick Rose in 2009 and the first with 30 points and 10 rebounds in a playoff game since Tim Duncan in 1998.

Edgecombe showed off his skill set all night long, including with this trey to extend Philadelphia's lead to 13 with just over three minutes to play.

Although Embiid continues to recover from appendectomy surgery, Edgecombe and Maxey have showed that the 76ers are not going to back down against the Celtics.

One win is not entirely going to change everything, but the fact that Philadelphia held Boston to just 39% shooting from the floor and less than 100 points in the game shows the potential that is there, especially if Embiid is on the floor.

This is likely still Boston's series to lose, but if Edgecombe continues to play at this level and the defense can match his veteran-like play, the 76ers are not going to be as easy to deal with as it initially appeared following the Game 1 loss.
