It's been a decade since Steve Kerr took the reins of the Golden State Warriors.
His free-flowing offense elevated the Warriors, helping them become the latest NBA dynasty. Now, four championships and six trips to the NBA Finals later, he might be stepping down. Considering that, the Warriors might think outside the box to find him a replacement.
Per Tim Kawakami of the San Francisco Standard, however, they might actually target a familiar face to replace him, even if he has no prior coaching experience.
"Other names, some more realistic than others: Current defensive coordinator Jerry Stackhouse, current offensive coordinator Terry Stotts, Boston assistant Sam Cassel, TV analyst Brent Barry, and my outside-the-envelope candidate … Andre Iguodala," Kawakami wrote.
Iguodala played a pivotal role in three of the four rings he won in the Bay Area. He embraced a sixth man role despite being a borderline All-Star, providing high basketball IQ, an outstanding defensive presence and another ball-handler for the most revolutionary offense in recent NBA history.
He retired after the 2022-23 season, but he clearly has a close relationship with franchise legends Stephen Curry and Draymond Green, the latter of whom recently admitted he may not be back next season.
The Los Angeles Lakers are thriving with JJ Redick as their coach, and Warriors GM Mike Dunleavy Jr. might want to replicate that by hiring another former player with no coaching experience. Of course, it will take much more than just a new coach to take the Warriors back to the mountaintop.
Their roster is aging and brittle, and it lacks the high-end talent to compete with other powerhouses in the Western Conference. They'll have to make some major moves to maximize Curry's title window while it's still open.
