Some frustration regarding a non-call in one of the Stanley Cup playoff games on Thursday night.
When speaking to the media after his team’s 2-1 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes in Game 3 of the Metropolitan Division Semifinals, Ottawa Senators head coach Travis Green was asked what led to defenseman Jake Sanderson exiting the game in the second period. Green pointed to an incident where Hurricanes forward Taylor Hall delivered a high hit to Jake Sanderson.
“It’s pretty obvious why he left the game,” Green told reporters. “I just don’t understand how there’s not a five-minute major called on a hit to the head. It’s a blatant hit to the head. The kind of hit you don’t want to see. It’s ridiculous there wasn’t a review.”
The hit in question came a few minutes into the second period, when Hall was given a minor penalty for an illegal check to the head. However, Sanderson continued to play. It wasn’t until near the halfway mark of the game that the Montana native exited the game around a minute after he blocked a shot with his hand.

Sanderson didn’t return to the game . He logged 13:19 of ice time across 12 shifts. He posted a plus/minus of -1 while posting a shot on goal, delivering a hit and being credited with a shot block. After he exited the game, the Senators got on the board with a goal from Drake Batherson. However, the home side failed to complete the comeback, as a goal from Jackson Blake gave the Hurricanes their second lead of the game. They would hang on for a 2-1, taking a commanding 3-0 lead in the series.
There wasn’t any update on Sanderson’s condition postgame regarding his status for Game 4 on Saturday. With the Sens facing elimination, they can ill afford to have any more key players out of the lineup. The team is already missing Artem Zub, who hasn’t played since getting hurt in Game 1 last Saturday.
Sanderson has two assists so far in the series, both coming in the double-overtime loss in Game 2 on Monday.
