The Dallas Cowboys may have landed the best player in the 2026 NFL Draft with the 11th pick.
Former Ohio State star safety Caleb Downs is tailor-made for the modern game, bringing a hybrid defender to the unit that gave up the most points per game last season.
That's why he wants to get to work right away and prove why he was projected to be a top-three selection at one point.
When asked his thoughts about joining Christian Parker's defense, the Cowboys' new star had all but one question for his new defensive coordinator.
“Super-excited, honestly. I asked him, first thing, where’s the playbook at? Where’s the playbook and when can I get it?” Downs said as his introductory news conference. “Just because I am all about ball and that’s what I am looking forward to doing. So, he has been genuine since the moment I met him and I am glad he got to meet my parents and my sister.”
As a former defensive pass coordinator and DB coach, Parker should be able to bring out the best in Downs right out of the gate.
Even as a rookie, he's a significant upgrade over the struggling Malik Hooker, and his ability to stuff the run and disrupt passes in coverage is second to none in this class.
However, it takes much more than talent and athleticism to succeed in the toughest league in the world.
Clearly, his work ethic won't be a concern, as he didn't even want to wait to take his draft suit off to hit the field, the weight room and the film room.
That's the mindset of a franchise-changing player.
