Kentucky HC Mark Pope suffers another offseason loss after No. 1 overall recruit Tyran Stokes commits to Kansas

The 2026-27 college basketball season hasn't even tipped off, but Kentucky Wildcats head coach Mark Pope has already suffered one of his biggest losses.

Forward Tyran Stokes, the No. 1 player in the 2026 class, announced Tuesday on "Inside the NBA" that he will play for the Kansas Jayhawks this upcoming season. He unwrapped an "NBA 2K" cover of him wearing a Kansas jersey to confirm the decision.

Kentucky was once considered the favorite to land Stokes, but Kansas made a late push. That effort ultimately flipped him to the Big 12 power and leaves Pope without a prized recruit heading into next season.

Pope, who's entering his third season with the SEC school, isn't on the hot seat but could be on shaky ground. In his first two seasons with the Wildcats, he compiled a 46-26 record and made two NCAA Tournament trips but failed to lead the program past the Sweet 16. This past season, the Iowa State Cyclones eliminated the Wildcats in an 82-63 win in the second round of the Big Dance.

Kentucky — which hasn't made a Final Four since the 2014-15 season — may already be growing impatient with Pope. Landing a high-profile recruit in Stokes would've reinstilled confidence within the program.

"Stokes is the most talented prospect in the national class and a unique match-up for opposing defenders," 247 Sports' Adam Finkelstein wrote of the 6-foot-7, 230-pound forward.

Pope has landed guards Zoom Diallo (Washington Huskies) and Alex Wilkins (Furman Paladins) in the transfer portal and brought in Senegalese forward Ousmane N'Diaye. That's a decent haul, but he was clearly counting on adding Stokes, a talent who could propel the Wildcats back into national title contention.

Without Stokes, Kentucky's class looks even more unimpressive. 247Sports ranks the Wildcats' recruiting/transfer portal class No. 12 in the SEC.

"This is the greatest place in the world to play basketball," Pope said after the March Madness loss to Iowa State, via the school's website.

The coach, though, clearly hasn't sold that to Stokes and others, rendering him incapable of building an elite roster.
