How Blue Jays are slowly riding through wave of injuries

While the Toronto Blue Jays' early-season performance wasn't what fans were hoping for, they are slowly coming together following a storm of injuries.

They have won three straight series, Kazuma Okamoto's offense is finally coming alive, the changes in the bullpen are working well and they have two key additions back on the roster in George Springer and Trey Yesavage.

Kazuma Okamoto's adjustment

Okamoto's early-season struggles had many criticizing his four-year deal. But he's broken out of his slump, and he's playing like the star that they signed him to be.

In his last seven games, he has batted .304 with seven RBI, two home runs and three walks. He has delivered clutch hits with RISP and has been more patient at the plate. In mid-April, his strikeout rate was 35%, and it's now gone down to 31.9%

Bullpen changes

The Blue Jays taking Jeff Hoffman out of the closer role helped smooth things over in the pen by going with a player-by-committee approach

This has helped, too, to take pressure off of Hoffman, who was struggling in high-leverage situations.

Having relievers like Tyler Rogers, Louis Varland and Mason Fluharty placed in high-stakes situations instead has helped to mend the damage. Varland has succeeded immensely and picked up his second MLB save on April 25.

Return of George Springer and Trey Yesavage

While there are still several significant players on the IL, the Blue Jays got two key additions back this week. On Tuesday, Yesavage made his 2026 debut and pitched 5.1 innings, recorded three strikeouts and didn't give up any earned runs, picking up his first win this season.

Yesavage reminded everyone of how he was a dominant force last season, and his return is just what the Blue Jays needed to pick up the slack in the rotation.

The Blue Jays also got back their veteran Silver Slugger in Springer on April 29, who came off the bench and hit an RBI single in their 8-1 victory over the Boston Red Sox. Fans were jumping for George in his much-anticipated return.

The return of both Yesavage and Springer has brought more life to the clubhouse as the Blue Jays await the return of more key additions.
