Regardless of whether Aaron Rodgers returns for another season, the Pittsburgh Steelers need to think about the future.
That's why they rolled the dice on Penn State's Drew Allar, taking him in the third round as Mike McCarthy's project.
The physical tools are enticing, but Allar might be a year or two away. Also, he may not have the mental fortitude to be a professional quarterback.
In a conversation with The Athletic's Bruce Feldman, one NFL personnel director expressed serious concerns about Allar's mentality.
“He has a ton of real traits, but he’s just not a killer. I actually think he’s a really good processor, but I think it’s performance anxiety,” the director said. “It’s like in basketball: He’s the guy in the layup line, and you think, Oh, that guy’s gonna be good. But then you get into the game and he disappears.”
Allar was one of the way-too-early favorites to be a top-five pick in 2026. He was even projected as the first or second overall selection at one point.
The Nittany Lions struggled mightily last season, partly due to subpar quarterback play, and while it wasn't entirely his fault, it became painfully clear he wasn't fully ready.
That said, he wouldn't be the first quarterback who needs to work on things once he turns pro. Josh Allen was a similar prospect when he entered the league, so the Steelers may have landed a huge steal.
As for the mental side of the game, it can't always be taught, but he has to make the most of the resources at his disposal to prove he can handle the heat.
