Kyle Schwarber has himself a day as Phillies sweep the Giants

Philadelphia Phillies designated hitter Kyle Schwarber had quite a day on Thursday during a doubleheader against the Giants. The three-time All-Star went five-for-six with two doubles, two home runs, three RBI, three walks and didn't strike out.

Schwarber in Game 2 was a perfect four-for-four at the plate after going hitless in Game 1. The former Silver Slugger (2022) has not struck out in his last five games, with April 24 against the Atlanta Braves the last game he struck out.

Schwarber’s home run in the first game of the doubleheader was the 350th in his career, which took 1,321 games to achieve. It is the seventh fewest games to reach that many home runs, according to MLB’s Sarah Langs. New York Yankees outfielder and three-time MVP, Aaron Judge, did it in the fewest games, hitting his 350th home run in 1,088 games.

Kyle Schwarber matches Yankees Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig for his doubleheader performance

According to OptaSTATS, Schwarber’s performance in the doubleheader matches that of Yankees first baseman Lou Gehrig in 1935. Gehrig went six-for-nine, with two doubles, two home runs and three walks against the Chicago White Sox on August 26.

Before coming into Thursday’s doubleheader, Schwarber had been hitting slightly above the Mendoza line (.205) and raised his batting average 20 points by the day's end (.225).

Kyle Schwarber has proven to be worth every penny of both his contracts with the Phillies

The Phillies re-signed Schwarber to a five-year ($150 million) contract in the offseason to remain in Philadelphia after initially signing a four-year contract in free agency in 2022. Schwarber has proven to be worth every cent of both deals.

Between 2022 and 2025, Schwarber played in 150+ games each season (playing all 162 last year). He also led the National League in home runs twice (2022: 46 and 2025: 56), walked over 100+ times three times (leading the National League in 2024: 106) and finished second to Los Angeles Dodgers two-way star Shohei Ohtani in the MVP voting last season.

Schwarber has carried over that success to this season, as he is fourth in Major League Baseball in home runs (11). The de facto leader in the Phillies clubhouse, Schwarber’s presence off the field has proven valuable, as he's always the first to answer tough questions after brutal losses.

With the Phillies' fortunes seemingly changing, seeing Schwarber heating up could mean good things for the Phillies moving forward.
