The Pittsburgh Steelers taking a flier on Penn State Nittany Lions quarterback Drew Allar by making him a third-round pick during the 2026 NFL Draft has become quite the polarizing decision among local and national media personalities this spring.
During a recent film breakdown, Hall of Fame quarterback and current analyst Kurt Warner shared quite a bold prediction regarding what Allar could eventually be for the Steelers.
"The talent jumps off the screen when you watch this guy throw," Warner said about Allar, per Alex Roessler of Steelers Depot. "It is effortless for him to push the ball down the field."
Steelers legend Ben Roethlisberger and well-known analyst Todd McShay of The Ringer are among those who have offered more pessimistic takes about the Steelers grabbing Allar. That said, analyst Brian Baldinger believes Allar has "probably a top-10 arm in the league right now."
In theory, Allar shouldn't take a regular-season snap anytime soon. According to numerous reports, it continues to be a matter of when and not if future Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers will rejoin the Steelers for the 2026 season. Additionally, Pittsburgh has longtime backup Mason Rudolph and 2025 rookie Will Howard in its quarterback room.
Even if Allar does enough during the summer to enter September as Pittsburgh's QB2, he would only play if Rodgers went down with an injury or the Steelers lose much more than they win through the end of November.
"One of the questions always with a big-armed quarterback is: Can they control that big arm and become consistently accurate as a thrower? If so, this guy could become the steal of the draft and could become the best quarterback in this class. But that is a big 'if,'" Warner added about Allar.
Those running the Steelers clearly believe that head coach Mike McCarthy can get the most out of Allar's physical abilities. If Allar is permitted to spend a season developing as an unused backup, he could eventually prove the likes of Warner and Baldinger right.
