Whether or not the Cleveland Browns could trade star pass-rusher Myles Garrett after June 1 of this year remains one of the biggest questions hovering over the Browns this spring.
For his latest mailbag posted on Monday night, Browns insider Tony Grossi of ESPN/The Land on Demand suggested the club hasn't closed the door on a potential Garrett trade this offseason.
"I agree the Browns are becoming more open to the possibility of a future Garrett trade," Grossi wrote. "My opinion is that Garrett has made it known that he still would favor a trade to a contender. Another factor is that Garrett’s $40M-a-year contract figure already has become obsolete. Would you want to reinvest another $10M-a-year+ in a player who 1. Doesn’t want to be here, and 2. Will be 30 in December?"
Grossi was referencing how Will Anderson Jr. of the Houston Texans reset the market for edge-rushers when he signed a three-year, $150M extension that reportedly included $134M guaranteed and a no-trade clause in April. Garrett has accomplished much more as a pro, as he set a new official single-season record of 23 sacks this past campaign en route to becoming a two-time Defensive Player of the Year.
Garrett signed a four-year, $160M extension to stay with the Browns last offseason.
"I am an advocate of trading Garrett to secure the assets to acquire the QB in 2027," Grossi responded to one reader. "Will [general manager Andrew Berry] and [Browns co-owner Jimmy Haslam] do it? They seem to be more open to it than before."
The 2027 draft class could feature multiple top-tier quarterback prospects, and trading Garrett theoretically could make it easier for the Browns to acquire the signal-caller of their choice next spring. That said, Cleveland seems serious about starting veteran Deshaun Watson at quarterback this coming September. Watson reportedly has no long-term future with the Browns, so embracing that win-now decision but then trading Garrett wouldn't make a whole lot of sense.
Then again, the Browns could always explore a Garrett deal later this fall before the trade deadline arrives.
