Whether or not quarterback Aaron Rodgers will either return to the Pittsburgh Steelers to serve as their starting quarterback for the 2026 season or retire has been the biggest storyline hovering over the franchise for months.
It now seems like the Steelers' latest Rodgers-related saga is coming to an end.
On Thursday morning, Adam Crowley and Dorin Dickerson of Pittsburgh sports radio station 93.7 The Fan revealed that Rodgers plans to be in the Steel City on Thursday evening "and will sign with the team this weekend."
Last offseason, Rodgers waited until just before the start of Pittsburgh's mandatory minicamp to sign a team-friendly one-year deal. The Steelers' upcoming mandatory minicamp is scheduled to run from June 2-4, but it was previously hinted that Pittsburgh players have been "counting on" him to re-sign with the club in time for him to report for OTAs on May 18.

While the #Steelers gave Rodgers the UFA tender, that’s considered a place holder. Hard to imagine he plays for $15M, which is why a deal must be worked out and finalized. But finality is coming soon, sources say. https://t.co/0bS5OGyRCt

Earlier this week, Steelers insider Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported that the patience of some individuals within the organization "could be starting to wear thin" regarding Rodgers' uncertain future. On Wednesday, Dulac noted that "the Steelers and the new coaching staff" want the future Hall of Famer to participate in OTA workouts.
Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy, who was hired by the club this past winter, was Rodgers' head coach when they were with the Green Bay Packers from 2006 through part of the 2018 season. Those two still have a close relationship, so much so that some reporters insisted that Rodgers wouldn't leave McCarthy without the coach's first-choice option at the sport's most important position.
Assuming Rodgers does put pen to paper on a deal before May 11, the futures of longtime backup Mason Rudolph, 2025 rookie Will Howard and 2026 third-round draft selection Drew Allar will become more unclear. The perception exists that Allar is a McCarthy pick who seemingly won't be going anywhere anytime soon, but either Howard or Rudolph could enter September as Pittsburgh's QB2.
Of course, the enigmatic Rodgers could always change his mind at the 11th hour and decide to retire while in Pittsburgh. That said, it sounds like the Steelers will officially have the 42-year-old back atop their depth chart sooner rather than later.
