The Kansas City Chiefs are operating as if Patrick Mahomes is going to be on the field in Week 1.
As much as they're saying all the right things about being cautious with his recovery from a torn ACL and LCL, Mahomes' uber-aggressive rehab approach might have him back to full strength for the start of the season.
Otherwise, it's hard to believe Travis Kelce would've even considered returning for another year. That's why, talking to his brother Jason on their "New Heights" podcast, Kelce had a hilarious way to describe how his quarterback is dealing with this situation.
"He’s just a hard-working American man who was in Kansas City, [expletive] knocking out rehab and getting his leg strength back," Kelce said. "It’s all dependent on how you handle rehab."
Of all the things people have said to describe one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time, "just a hard-working American" might be a first.
That doesn't make it a false statement, though. Mahomes has worked tirelessly, almost right after suffering a season-ending ACL injury, the first major ailment of his career. It was also the first time he failed not only to make the playoffs but also to reach the AFC Championship Game.
The Chiefs bolstered their defense in the NFL Draft and added reigning Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III to bolster their roster for a revenge campaign. And even though they must protect Mahomes from himself and make sure he doesn't play until he's fully healthy, it's become pretty clear that this hard-working American is going to do whatever it takes to get on the gridiron as soon as possible.
