Carson Wentz opens up about 'different' experience amid Kyler Murray, J.J. McCarthy competition

NFL outsiders were surprised to learn in March that veteran Carson Wentz had re-signed with a Minnesota Vikings team that had signed Kyler Murray to compete with 2024 first-round draft pick J.J. McCarthy for its starting quarterback job.

During a recent chat with Luke Gamble of KFYR-TV, Wentz discussed what could be an awkward situation for those involved.

Carson Wentz thinks he, Kyler Murray and J.J. McCarthy can all help each other improve

"It’s a different dynamic, obviously, in the room with a couple other guys and having Kyler now in the mix," Wentz explained, per Charean Williams of Pro Football Talk. "It’s fun. It’s fun to compete. It’s fun to get to know guys in another way. But I think just the competition in the environment will make everybody better."

Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell previously suggested that Wentz could compete with Murray and McCarthy later this summer. However, numerous reports have since indicated that Murray is the heavy favorite to enter September atop Minnesota's depth chart.

Meanwhile, McCarthy seemingly has little value as a tradable asset. However, the Vikings having Wentz on the roster could allow them to make McCarthy available to interested teams before the 2026 regular season gets underway.

How Carson Wentz is feeling coming off his latest injury

Wentz's 2025 campaign came to an end when he somewhat controversially took numerous unnecessary hits that left him needing season-ending surgery on his left shoulder. While speaking with Gamble, Wentz offered an update on his recovery.

"Physically, I feel great," Wentz explained. “Shoulder’s more or less behind me now. It wasn’t fun by any means, but surgery went well, and rehab’s gone really well, too. So for me, it’s behind me. I’m healthy, and I’ll be ready to roll.”

Wentz may be ready to roll, but his exact role with the Vikings is very much up in the air this spring. The Minnesota starting job seems to be Murray's to lose, and it remains to be seen if Wentz will be given a real opportunity to rise up the depth chart from now through the club's final preseason game.
