Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell has insisted on multiple occasions that he is not ready to give up on 2024 first-round draft pick J.J. McCarthy, even though the Vikings signed quarterback Kyler Murray to a team-friendly one-year contract in March.
For an update shared on Thursday, NFL insider Tony Pauline of EssentiallySports suggested that O’Connell and Co. have a preference regarding which player will win the QB1 job this summer.
"I keep hearing from multiple sources that, despite the Minnesota Vikings declaring the quarterback spot will be a fair and open competition this summer, it’s Kyler Murray’s job to lose," Pauline wrote.
Pauline offered his update days after star wide receiver Justin Jefferson made it known that he was "definitely looking forward to" seeing what Murray would offer the Vikings from springtime workouts through the summer. Jefferson previously seemed to take some shots at McCarthy during the offseason, but the wideout more recently revealed that he and McCarthy met on multiple occasions over the past few months for workouts.
Different injury setbacks limited McCarthy to just 10 regular-season starts over his first two pro campaigns, and he reportedly struggled to learn all of the playbook ahead of the 2025 season. He seemingly doesn't have much value as a tradable asset during the ongoing NFL Draft, but it sounds like he also doesn't have much of a future with his current employer.
"While I’m told McCarthy is well-liked by some in the organization," Pauline added, "the cards are stacked against him, and several decision-makers in Minnesota believe Murray winning the job is the easiest way to cut ties with the player selected with the 10th pick of the draft in 2024."
History shows that at least one team would probably take a flier on McCarthy as a project for the future if he were made available after the Vikings play their final game of the preseason in August. Such a scenario may play out unless he becomes a revelation and outperforms Murray over the next handful of months.
