John Harbaugh is obsessed with putting together a winning roster for his first season with the New York Giants, and it's easy to tell that he's up late at night, carefully going over the details.
Harbaugh took the spotlight during his first NFL Draft with the Giants, where the team picked Ohio State linebacker Arvell Reese as the 5th overall selection. The move immediately earned rave reviews, including Mike Renner of CBS Sports giving the Giants an A+ grade for the selection.
"The Giants just became the scariest edge-rushing group in the NFL and truthfully it's not even close," he noted. "Their third down packages are going to be a true sprint to the quarterback. Reese has special play strength for someone with 4.46 speed. And he's only scratching the surface at 20 years old."
But, what does Harbaugh think of Reese and the rest of the Giants' rookie class? He's more than liking his early interaction with them.
Ahead of OTAs, the Giants held a brief rookie minicamp. Speaking to reporters surrounding the event, Harbaugh was asked for his thoughts on his new defensive player. He said that Reese was a fast learner, which is just what you need in the NFL.
"Picks things up really quick," Harbaugh said of the first-round pick, via the team's website. "Very serious minded. Very diligent about the assignments. I don't think he's got one assignment wrong throughout the two days, which is great to see."
Another solid rookie for the Giants is wide receiver Malachi Fields. New York traded up in to the third round to snag the Notre Dame player, and Harbaugh is also happy with his early progress.
"Malachi, a bunch of plays," Harbaugh said. "Did you see him on the slants today? He made every catch yesterday. Made one high catch over the top of the corner one time. Happy with all those guys."
Reese was also asked for his thoughts on his coach. He, of course, said glowing things about the veteran head coach.
"He's a great coach, he relates to his players," Reese said regarding Harbaugh. "I feel like he one of those coaches who take the time to get to know his players. And I feel like that's real important when it come to building a team that you want to have a real brotherhood. I feel like coach Harbaugh a great coach so far."
The rookies are making an impression on Harbaugh, and he's also making an impression on them. It's certainly a positive vibe in Giants camp right now, and that should translate into chemistry on the field come September.
