Matt Fitzpatrick details what his brother Alex's recent success means to him

Alex Fitzpatrick has been in his brother's shadow for most of his golfing career, but he's finally making a name for himself after securing his PGA Tour card and finishing top-10 in back-to-back Signature Events. Even though his little brother is starting to steal his spotlight, no one is rooting harder for Alex to succeed than Matt Fitzpatrick.

Speaking ahead of the 2026 PGA Championship at Aronimink Golf Club, Matt admitted he's relishing Alex's recent rise to prominence on the PGA Tour.

"I'm probably known as Alex's brother now, as opposed to him being Matt's brother," Matt told reporters on Monday. "Listen, I love talking about my brother. It's an amazing position to be in to have that privilege to talk about how well he's doing. I'd so much rather have these questions, conversations, than the opposite of, you know, why is he not playing well and whatnot."

Alex has spent the last few years grinding on the DP World Tour and hoping to one day join his brother in the United States. That day finally came when the Fitzpatrick brothers teamed up to win the Zurich Classic of New Orleans in April, giving Alex a two-year exemption on the PGA Tour.

Alex is already making the most of this opportunity, finishing T9 at the Cadillac Championship and solo fourth at the Truist Championship in his first two starts as a full-time PGA Tour player. He entered the final round of the Truist Championship as the solo leader, and although he didn't finish the job, the inexperienced rookie still finished top-five in a star-studded field.

"I think impressed more than anything. Super proud of him for how he's been playing and following up the win at Zurich with two brilliant, brilliant weeks, both at Doral and obviously last week as well," Matt said of Alex. "I think to battle back how he did yesterday after the start was really impressive, and I think he should credit himself because I think in years gone by, probably could have gotten away from him pretty quickly. To be in contention right to the 70th hole was a testament to how far he's come."

The Fitzpatrick brothers are finally on the same playing field

The Fitzpatricks haven't played much competitive golf together because Matt is a PGA Tour veteran, and Alex has played primarily in Europe since turning pro. Now, they'll be playing in the same tournaments for at least the next two years.

If they ever find themselves in the heat of battle on a Sunday afternoon soon, it'll be the first time for both brothers.

"Obviously, we had not really been in contention yet together," Matt said. "I think once on the DP World Tour in Switzerland, but yeah, I would imagine it's going to be a weird feeling when that time does come."

Matt and Alex will tee it up at the PGA Championship at Aronimink this week, marking just the second time both players will be in the same major championship field.
