After the Oklahoma City Thunder's sweep of the Los Angeles Lakers, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander made sure to recognize the significance of competition against a LeBron James-led team at this point in his career.
Knowing James now has a decision to make about his future, Gilgeous-Alexander noted his ability to be effective and play at a high level at age 41 after the game.
“He was impressive out there…I’m not sure we will see anything like it again. His longevity and his greatness for this long," the reigning regular season and Finals MVP said about James, a four-time winner of both awards.
And while people will always debate where James ranks all-time, Gilgeous-Alexander's point about his longevity is valid. James wrapped up his 23rd season by playing 40 minutes and scoring 24 points with 12 rebounds and three assists in the Lakers' 115-110 loss on Monday night.
James averaged 23.2 points, 6.7 boards and 7.3 assists throughout the 2026 playoffs, setting a new NBA record for career postseason games played, leading Los Angeles to a first series win over the Houston Rockets before being eliminated by the Thunder.

James elevated his game with Luka Doncic out of action following a regular season that saw him post averages of 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds and 7.2 assists, all numbers still incredibly impressive for a player in his 23rd season and unparalleled in NBA history.
With uncertainty surrounding James' future - he's now a free agent and many question if the Lakers can afford to bring him back and still build a championship caliber team, there's always the chance that he decides to retire and Monday night was his final NBA game.
To his credit, Gilgeous-Alexander lived up to the moment, too. He scored 35 points in 39 minutes in leading the Thunder to a series-clinching win that has Oklahoma City back in the Conference Finals, a round James has reached 12 times in his career.
