The San Antonio Spurs emphatically bounced back from a Game 4 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves in Tuesday's 126-97 drubbing in Game 5 to take a 3-2 series lead in the Western Conference semifinals.
Even after the Wolves mounted a 12-2 run to start the third quarter and cut into a 59-47 San Antonio halftime lead, the Spurs put together some runs of their own and benefited from a clutch performance off the bench from the NBA's Sixth Man of the Year, Keldon Johnson.
While Victor Wembanyama returned from his Game 4 ejection with a vengeance by scoring a team-high 27 points and recording a playoff career-high 17 rebounds, Johnson once again showed how vital to this team's success he can be.
Johnson had a postseason career-high 21 points (8-of-11 FG) in 22 minutes off the bench and logged an impressive plus/minus (+17). He was especially key to San Antonio's 11-2 run to answer Minnesota's early third-quarter charge, extending its lead to nine with this contested bucket.

Coming into Game 5, Johnson was shooting an efficient 51.9% from the floor, so it is no surprise that he knocked down his shots on Tuesday night at such a high rate. With that said, it is not like he has had a good playoff run up to this point.
In the nine postseason games prior to the Game 5 win, Johnson eclipsed 10 points only twice and had attempted 10 or more shots just once during that span. With the high stakes of Tuesday's Game 5 in a tied series before the tip, Johnson served a reminder of what he is capable of when the ball is in his hands.
A lot of the credit should also go to De'Aaron Fox (18 points, 6-of-15 FG) and second-year player Stephon Castle (17 points, 8-of-11 FG), who accounted for a combined 26 shot attempts in the game. Rookie Dylan Harper (12 points, 10 rebounds) also continues to impress and showcased his potential with key plays throughout the win.
There is a lot of praise to go around following a dominant performance, especially after the Timberwolves clawed their way back into the game in the third quarter. However, Johnson's ability to make shots at a high percentage and impact the game the way that he continues to do off the bench was on display in a crucial game in the series.
If this team is fully healthy and plays with the determination that it had in Game 5, it is hard to see it losing this series to the Timberwolves after reestablishing the series lead. If they need any more motivation, they went 4-1 against the Oklahoma City Thunder during the regular season, so a potential Western Conference finals matchup with them should at least provide a little confidence being one win away from punching their ticket.
However, they still need to take care of business against the Timberwolves before getting ahead of themselves. Tuesday's Game 5 win was an excellent step toward accomplishing that, while further highlighting why Johnson took home the Sixth Man of the Year award and his overall importance off the bench.
