Browns urged to figure out QB situation as Shedeur Sanders waits

The Cleveland Browns' quarterback situation is complicated heading into the 2026-27 season, and the team is being urged to get its sticky situation figured out.

Right now, the team has three signal-callers: veteran Deshaun Watson, who's healthy again after his Achilles injury, Shedeur Sanders and Dillon Gabriel.

The team's Watson deal has been something of a cap space nightmare, but that's all water under the bridge, and what matters is the future. But if the Browns want to win in 2026, and they do, they should get a handle on their quarterback status.

In a feature published on Tuesday by USA Today's For the Win, Christian D'Andrea names the "biggest offseason weakness for all 32 NFL teams." D'Andrea calls them each team's most "interesting flaw."

For the Browns, it's simple: Fix the quarterback dilemma.

Cleveland needs to get their quarterback set

"Cleveland is trying to rehabilitate Deshaun Watson, who has been the league's 41st-best quarterback when on the field for the Browns and missed a wide swath of games due to injury and the 20-plus accusations of sexual misconduct that the league itself deemed 'predatory behavior,'" D'Andrea wrote.

D'Andrea adds: "Behind him are Shedeur Sanders and Dillon Gabriel, 4-9 combined as starters despite a top four defense and the league's 39th and 40th-best quarterbacks in terms of EPA in 2025 out of a field of 40). Just one more year before Watson can reasonably become one of the largest dead salary cap space hits in NFL history."

That last line is an "ouch," but it rings true. The Browns have a solid core, and if they can just get this quarterback situation turned around, they'll have a real chance to thrive this season. Time will tell what the new head coach, Todd Monken, decides.
