John Harbaugh has some cleaning up to do on Giants' roster

As the 2026-27 season approaches, the anticipation is building surrounding John Harbaugh and what his inaugural year will look like with the New York Giants. Harbaugh is coming to New York after 18 seasons with the Baltimore Ravens, so he's obviously anything but a newbie, but he's new to the Giants.

The Giants closed out their 2025-26 season with a 4-13 record, so Harbaugh has his work cut out for him. But, the Giants had a solid draft and snagged Ohio State linebacker and edge-rusher Arvell Reese with their No. 5 overall pick and Miami offensive tackle Francis Mauigoa at No. 10, so they're adding plenty of fresh talent to their lineup.

Still, Harbaugh has work ahead if he wants to turn this team around in just a season.

John Harbaugh still has work to do with the Giants

In a piece about each NFL team's biggest weakness at this point, out on Tuesday, Christian D'Andrea of USA Today's For the Win says the Giants badly need to work on their run defense going into the new season.

"Giants will have a fearsome pass rush after pairing Brian Burns with Abdul Carter and now 2026 fifth overall pick Arvell Reese," she states in the piece. "This may not matter if opponents simply run all over them like they did in 2025. New York's 0.109 EPA per run play allowed was worst in the league and more than twice as bad as 31st-place Buffalo (0.049)."

While that's certainly the case, D'Andrea also points out that "veteran help has arrived" in the form of Shelby Harris, DJ Reader and Tremaine Edmunds, but that "more reinforcements may be needed."

Harbaugh is a veteran head coach, and there's no question that he's addressing the run defense heading into the new season. So, New York needn't be worried about that aspect of the team. He has something to prove going into this season, and the moves Harbaugh and the front office are making during the offseason should ensure that Giants fans sleep well at night.
