Justin Allgaier admitted to making a crucial mistake in the closing laps of Saturday's NASCAR O'Reilly Auto Parts Series race at Dover Motor Speedway, but also wished the lapped car of Blake Lothian had made a different choice as Allgaier and Corey Day came up on him.
Lothian forced Allgaier to go low and get around him as Day went high and got to Allgaier's right-rear quarter panel. That gave Day enough momentum to clear Allgaier and drive off into the Delaware sunset to take the win.
"[Lothian] said that the spotter was telling him inside," Allgaier said, per Matt Weaver of Motorsport.com. "I wish in hindsight he would've just picked a lane and stuck in it. I would've liked to have been able to run the top. I think it would've been really hard for Corey to pass if we were able to run the top right there. Ultimately, that's not what happened. You can't give up the right-rear quarter panel."
Allgaier's runner-up finish on Saturday is his second close loss in three weeks. He led 54 laps at Texas on May 2 but lost the race to Kyle Larson after he was unable to find a way around Larson in the final laps.

Allgaier does have one big reason for optimism after Saturday, however: he now leads the series standings by 175 points over Sheldon Creed with 10 races to go in the regular season, making it more likely with every passing week that he'll be the No. 1 seed going into the nine-race Chase.
