While everybody was busy talking about Caitlin Clark as the hottest rising star in the WNBA, UConn legend Paige Bueckers was carving a path of her own.
Bueckers dominated right out of the gate in her first season with the Dallas Wings, leaving no doubt about her No. 1 pick status.
Now, in her second season in the league, the sharpshooting guard is taking her game to new heights, to the point where she may have a legitimate case as the best young point guard in the game.
That's not much of a surprise, given who she's molding her game after. When asked about her preparation and approach, Bueckers dissected her game and what make ser similar to Steph Curry.
The former national champion admitted that she's trying to replicate what Curry does for the Golden State Warriors, knowing how his off-ball movements and gravity as a shooter can also help her have a similar impact for her team.
"If you watch Steph Curry, he's probably the best screener in the NBA, and he has the best gravity in the NBA," Bueckers told Melissa Triebwasser. "So, sort of mimic after him and his off-ball movement, his off-ball screening, and his selflessness is something that I've actually learned from a lot."
Bueckers has a smooth game. She's got elite handles, a quick first step, a beautiful crossover and can drop buckets from all three levels.
Like Curry, she can flirt with 50/40/90 shooting for a season, and she's just a human torch waiting to get lit on any given night.
She still has some work to do to reach Curry levels of dominance and impact on the game, but with career averages of 19.3 points, 3.8 rebounds, 5.4 assists, 1.5 steals and 1.2 three-pointers per game on 48.3 percent from the floor and 34.9 percent from beyond the arc, she's definitely trending in the right direction.
