Why Chase Briscoe was the NASCAR All-Star Race runner-up

Chase Briscoe held off Denny Hamlin for as long as he could in Sunday's NASCAR All-Star Race at Dover Motor Speedway before Hamlin's long-run speed became too much to handle.

Briscoe was passed for the win with 30 laps to go after he had initially gotten around Hamlin on the race's final restart with less than 60 circuits remaining.

It was a similar situation to the first half of Sunday's race, where Briscoe took an early lead but fell to fifth by the competition caution on Lap 75 as Hamlin took the lead from Tyler Reddick.

Chase Briscoe reacts to runner-up finish at NASCAR All-Star Race

"Obviously a really fast car," Briscoe told Fox Sports. "Just proud of our group. I knocked the wall down in practice and we basically rebuilt the whole car. Now that we didn't win, I wish it was a points race. Had a shot there at the end for a million bucks. Can't ask for anything more."

Briscoe led 61 laps en route to his career-best All-Star Race finish. He's 17th in the Cup Series standings, six points out of a Chase berth going into the 13th race of the season at Charlotte Motor Speedway on May 24.

Sunday's race may not count towards the championship, but it could certainly give some much-needed momentum to Briscoe and his No. 19 team.
