Bo Bichette candidly addresses slow start to tenure with Mets

To say that the New York Mets have been one of the most disappointing teams in baseball this season would be a huge understatement.

Carlos Mendoza's team is sitting at 20-26 and at the bottom of the NL East. Their perceived strong offseason hasn't translated to on-field success so far.

Notably, some of those issues have to do with Bo Bichette, who was supposed to have a major impact right out of the gate in Queens but has struggled mightily instead.

In an interview with The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal, the former Toronto Blue Jays star admitted that he's had a tough time adapting to a new organization.

“I don’t know if it’s been the toughest stretch of my career. But it’s up there,” Bichette said. “There are a lot of things I didn’t anticipate. Just dealing with everything. New teammates. New organization. Staff. New fan base. Everything, I think.” 

Bichette has been one of the most disappointing players in the league this season.

There were major concerns about his form in spring training, and he's been a liability on defense. To make things even worse, he's not giving them much at the plate, either.

According to Baseball Reference, he's slashing just .210/.262/.269 with 18 RBI, two home runs and one stolen base. He also has a -0.7 bWAR for the season.

That clearly isn't what the Mets signed up for when they gave him a three-year, $126 million deal this offseason. That said, he's not looking to exercise his opt-out option this offseason.

“I signed here for three years. The opt-outs, any player would love them, to have control of their future, whatever the case might be, where they want to be, if they want to search for something else, I don’t know. But when I signed here, I took it as a three-year deal,” Bichette said.

There's still plenty of baseball left this season, but Bichette will have to step up to justify his lofty price tag.
