Victor Wembanyama needed just three years to lead the San Antonio Spurs to the playoffs.
Now, in just his first postseason berth, he's made it all the way to the Western Conference Finals.
A steep challenge awaits the former No. 1 pick and his teammates, as they will now have to beat the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder, a team that's undefeated after the first two rounds.
Nevertheless, he still seems to like his chances. When asked about the upcoming matchup, the French superstar claimed his team would be just fine as long as they keep doing what they need to do.
“Of course, we’re confident, but we need to keep the right confidence level,” Wembanyama told the media. “Right now, I’m not even thinking about it. I’m just thinking about recovering. I’m thinking about getting this press conference over with. And we’re going to see about it in the next couple of days, but it’s really going to be the same as usual. Prepare, take care of your body, scout, watch the film, practice.”
Taking down the defending champions will be a tough task, to say the least. Then again, it looks like the Spurs might be the only team with a legitimate chance to do so.
They've beaten them four of the last five times, and Wembanyama is 5-4 against them all time.
Then again, health will also be a major factor in this series. Spurs PG De'Aaron Fox is dealing with an ankle injury, whereas Thunder SF Jalen Williams will be back from a hamstring injury.
The Spurs always knew Wembanyama was special and the chosen one to lead them back to the promised land. Now, it's time for him to take the next leap in his development.
