Had he not been a race car driver, Jeff Burton probably would've been a pretty good diplomat.
The South Boston, Virginia, native earned the nickname "The Mayor" thanks to his ability to act as a voice for drivers in regard to safety and other matters regarding NASCAR.
On the racetrack, Burton was just as skilled, winning 21 Cup Series races, including a pair of crown jewels in the Coke 600 and Southern 500.
It's for those reasons, among others, that Burton was chosen Tuesday as one of the three members of the 2027 NASCAR Hall of Fame class.
"It's amazing to have gone through my career and to be in this position," Burton said Tuesday on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio. "I'm sitting here looking at Richard Petty's car, and Jody Ridley's car, and Fred Lorenzen's car, and I'm like, 'What the hell? I don't belong with these people.' It's pretty cool."

Burton made a name for himself with Roush Racing in the late 1990s, scoring his first NASCAR Cup win in the inaugural race at Texas Motor Speedway in 1997. From 1997-2000, Burton finished top five in the points standings every year and won a combined 15 races, including a career-high six in 1999.
Burton later left Roush during the middle of the 2004 season and signed with Richard Childress Racing, becoming a teammate of fellow 2027 inductee Kevin Harvick. He earned the final four victories of his career at RCR and made the Chase four times before retiring from full-time driving at the end of 2013.
"I have so much respect for the sport and appreciation for it," Burton said. "This is my community."
It's a community that will forever remember Burton when he, along with Harvick and Larry Phillips, are inducted into the Hall of Fame on Jan. 22, 2027.
