Browns HC Todd Monken praises Shedeur Sanders, Deshaun Watson amid QB competition

The Cleveland Browns are juggling a quarterback room that consists of second-year player Shedeur Sanders, veteran Deshaun Watson, who's healthy again after his Achilles injury, Dillon Gabriel and rookie Taylen Green.

It's a complicated situation, but head coach Todd Monken is making it clear how he feels about Sanders.

Heading into the new season, one of the big question marks surrounding the Browns is their unique quarterback situation. Watson is healthy again, so it's his turn to finally prove his stuff, but Sanders gets plenty of media attention and could also get serious playing time.

On Wednesday, Monken spoke out with his thoughts on Sanders, and they were good.

"I think Shedeur's come miles, in terms of his progressions, getting the ball out, his understanding of concepts," Monken told reporters of the budding quarterback during a presser, according to ESPN. "I think he's really, really come a long way."

Sanders started in seven games during his rookie season in 2025, so that was a lot of pressure on the signal-caller. He continues to be in competition with Watson and split first-team reps in team drills with him on Wednesday, when the Browns had the team's second OTA practice.

Monken also said nice things about Watson and his progress, so he's not really showing favoritism either way.

"Deshaun's athleticism shows up," MonkenĀ said. "Obviously, he's had that, but he's had injuries that have set him back. I wouldn't say it's a surprise, but it's exciting to see. It's a weapon for him. It's one of his superpowers, his athleticism."

Gabriel and Green took second- and third-team reps, so Watson and Sanders are vying for the starting position. Browns fans will certainly be curious to see who comes out on top.
