Has relationship between Brandon Aiyuk and 49ers become personal?

It's been nearly two years since Brandon Aiyuk last suited up for the San Francisco 49ers, and it seems like he's already played his last game for the organization.

Nevertheless, he's still under contract, so he could still get back on the field if he's healthy.

With no takers in a trade and teams waiting for his release, Aiyuk could still reclaim control of his career.

According to NFL insider Mike Garafolo, he could at least make sure the 49ers don't take more money out of his pocket by simply showing up at the facility. However, he's just too proud to do that.

Brandon Aiyuk and the 49ers are 'feuding over pride'

"I would have told him to show up for work a couple of weeks ago. Go ahead. See if they're willing to let you work out and run routes and do things at their facility," Garafolo said on "The Rich Eisen Show". "He did not do that. He has not done that. He's got a lot of pride."

Likewise, Garafolo says the 49ers are making a statement. Things have become personal now, and since he didn't hold his end of the bargain last season, they're essentially getting back at him now:

"It's almost out of, I don't want to say spite, but it's almost like, 'You know what? You sort of held us hostage last year, now it's our turn right now.'"

That makes sense to a degree, but all parties should be pushing toward the same goal here.

Aiyuk should want his money and an opportunity to prove that he can still be a difference-maker. The 49ers should want someone who gives them the best chance to succeed.

Of course, at this point, reconciliation sounds unlikely. That ship may have sailed after so many months of back and forth and testing each other's limits.

That said, this is a business first and foremost, and nothing can help pro athletes and their teams bury the hatchet more than some cash and winning some football games.
