Spurs assistant Sean Sweeney could be top HC candidate for Mavericks

The Dallas Mavericks are looking for a new head coach.

Despite having the No. 1 overall pick and Rookie of the Year in Cooper Flagg and veterans like Klay Thompson and Khris Middleton, head coach Jason Kidd went 26-56 this past season.

That record prompted new president Masai Ujiri to envision a new future for the Mavericks.

“As we evaluate the future of our basketball program, we believe this is the right moment for a new direction for our team,” Ujiri said in a statement. “We have high expectations for this franchise and a responsibility to build a basketball organization capable of sustained championship contention. We will conduct a thorough, disciplined search for our next head coach and continue to evaluate our entire basketball operations staff to ensure we compete at the standard Mavs fans expect and deserve.”

Ujiri was hired by the Mavericks as their new team president and alternate governor. He's replacing Nico Harrison, who infamously traded perennial All-NBA guard Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers in February 2025.

The Mavs are undoubtedly going through a time of change, and Ujiri's first big decision with the team will be hiring Kidd's replacement.

There are certainly options out there for Dallas, and the Mavericks have an intriguing core, led by Flagg, that the new coach can build around.

Many names will certainly be banteid about, but according to NBA reporter Brett Siegel, San Antonio Spurs assistant Sean Sweeney is going to be a big name to watch in this coaching search.
