The NFL gave football fans a juicy Week 1 matchup when the league scheduled the Tennessee Titans to open their regular season with a home game versus the New York Jets on Sept. 13.
Of course, former Jets head coach Robert Saleh will make his official debut as Tennessee head coach on that Sunday afternoon. While speaking with reporters on Thursday, Saleh was asked about the possible revenge spot.
"I’ve said it before," Saleh explained, as shared by Myles Simmons of Pro Football Talk. "I’m appreciative of the Jets and everything that I had. It’s been over a year and a half now. In the NFL, it’s kind of like 10 years."
Saleh had never served as the main man for a franchise before the Jets hired him in January 2021. His tenure was filled with more lows than highs, as he failed to record a single winning season through the end of the 2023 campaign. People associated with the Jets and outsiders were then stunned when team owner Woody Johnson fired Saleh roughly 48 hours after the club fell to 2-3 during the 2024 season.
Saleh has expressed regret over playing quarterback Zach Wilson as a rookie during the 2021 season. The coach also had to endure the Jets' Aaron Rodgers era that included the future Hall of Famer going down with a torn Achilles tendon four offensive snaps into his New York debut in September 2023.
"It’s to be expected with the NFL, but I don’t think anything of it," Saleh added about the Week 1 matchup versus the Jets.
It's hardly a surprise that a coach would make such comments about a contest that is still months down the road. That said, history shows that players will often use the idea of getting revenge for their head coach as somewhat of a rallying cry heading into a game. In short, Titans players may have plenty to say about wanting to beat the Jets once the Labor Day holiday weekend comes and goes.
