Tigers' Tarik Skubal emerging as top trade chip ahead of deadline

With the Detroit Tigers descending out of contention in the AL Central, their two-time reigning AL Cy Young winner, Tarik Skubal, is emerging as a premier trade chip with the Aug. 3 deadline looming.

Skubal is entering the final year of his contract, and the likelihood of a blockbuster deal is surfacing.

Since Skubal landed on the IL, the Tigers have sported a poor 2-14 record. Before Skubal landed on the IL on May 4 to undergo elbow surgery to remove loose bodies, the Tigers were tied for first place in the AL Central.

Skubal is anticipated to command a free-agent contract exceeding $400 million this offseason. When it comes to extension talks with Detroit, nothing significant has transpired.

Analyzing the Tarik Skubal situation

While Skubal's injury was projected to impact his contract, his recovery timeline has progressed quickly, and he's making big strides.

He's already been throwing bullpen sessions, making him a compelling trade chip for contending teams. Imagine having Skubal for a pennant race, providing a team with a historically dominant frontline ace.

Pending that he doesn't face any setbacks in his recovery and returns to his masterful form, Skubal will have some tough decisions to make.

Skubal is known for his elite strikeout ability (27.1% strikeout rate) and incredible command on the mound. His 3.6% walk rate makes him a huge threat against opposing lineups, and his ability to eat up innings makes him a postseason must-have.

Skubal is a top high-caliber free agent starter available on the market, with bidding wars forecasted to be huge. The return is likely to include multiple top-100 or top-50 prospects.

The all-in, aggressive Los Angeles Dodgers are eyeing Skubal, but other teams are targeting the 29-year-old, such as the Atlanta Braves, Baltimore Orioles, New York Mets and San Diego Padres, etc.
