The Dallas Cowboys have found a true blessing in George Pickens. He was their best offensive player last season and agreed to return on a franchise tag deal.
The former Pittsburgh Steelers star hasn't been with the team in OTAs, but that doesn't mean he's trying to force his way into a long-term deal.
According to ESPN insider Jeremy Fowler, Pickens has worked out with Cowboys players this offseason.
More importantly, he reportedly wants to be with the organization long-term, even if that means waiting to get a new deal.
“He signed the franchise tag, $27 million. Hasn’t really been a fixture in the building, kind of stayed away a little bit but I’m told he has worked with Dak Prescott this offseason offsite,” Fowler said (h/t Bleacher Report). “Loves being a Cowboy, loves a long-term deal more. They weren’t able to get one, but they’re hopeful down the road they can work it out. But I don’t expect a holdout at this point, should be locked in for the Cowboys in 2026.”
The Cowboys have made it loud and clear that they don't want to give Pickens a contract extension this offseason.
Team owner/general manager Jerry Jones even challenged him to prove the doubters wrong this season, citing that there were some doubts about trading for him because of his reputation.
Likewise, that made the Cowboys' approach a bit more surprising. Pickens had a history of temper tantrums, and letting him know that they wouldn't give him a new long-term contract could've been problematic.
Even so, it looks like Pickens has loved his time in Arlington so far, and barring a change of heart. he'll show up and play under the franchise tag.
