Felix Rosenqvist was prepared to win Sunday's Indianapolis 500 or wreck trying.
The 34-year-old Swede spent most of the final lap of Sunday's race side by side with his Meyer Shank Racing teammate in Marcus Armstrong, knowing that passing Armstrong for second was his ticket to having any chance at passing David Malukas for the win.
Rosenqvist, who was third when the white flag flew, knew making a bold move to the outside of his MSR teammate was his best shot at victory.
"That's kind of the only option you have," Rosenqvist said. "You don't really have an option to go low because there wasn't any room, and it was just stacked down there, and I was just kind of -- I was going wheel to wheel with I think Marcus for the whole back straight, so there wasn't a door open to go in. And I was like, 'Yep, this is going to be it. Like, I'll stay flat and see what happens.'"
Everything fell into place on the final lap for Rosenqvist, who scored the victory in the closest finish in Indianapolis 500 history.
"You need to be ready to risk it all on the last lap," Rosenqvist said. "If it ended in the fence, I think I would have been proud for my run. That's the way you have to approach it. It worked out perfectly that David was -- he was the perfect distance ahead to give me a little tow because, if he was closer, I probably would have just sat on his gearbox over the finish line."
Rosenqvist's take-no-prisoners approach to the final lap is necessary to win at Indianapolis. His moves will forever be replayed every May.
His philosophy regarding the race's final moments would likely be appreciated by a large portion of the wild, passionate crowd of over 350,000 that filed into the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Sunday afternoon.
"I'll definitely say the balls arrived when they needed to," Rosenqvist said. "That's just how much you want it -- it's hard to explain that feeling, that you want it so much and you have so much adrenaline that you literally don't care if you're going to crash. You're just going all in."
