'The Devil Wears Orange and Blue': Karl-Anthony Towns' streak continues

Karl-Anthony Towns had to miss the premiere of "The Devil Wears Prada 2" because he had a playoff game that night. Since the film's final premiere April 23, the movie has set box-office records and Towns' team hasn't lost a playoff game.

The New York Knicks won their 11th straight game and advanced to the NBA Finals Monday with a 130-93 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers. Towns has a chance to earn his first championship ring, the same year he's in his first film to earn over $600M at the box office.

New York Knicks made a long-awaited return to NBA Finals

Fans of "The Devil Wears Prada" have had to wait two decades to see the continuing adventures of iconic fashion editor Miranda Priestley and her plucky former assistant Andrea "Andy" Sachs. Knicks fans have waited even longer to return to the Finals, waiting 27 years between Eastern Conference titles.

Towns has a short cameo in the film. Playing himself, Towns briefly chats up Sachs, played by Anne Hathaway, who is a die-hard fan of the Knicks in real life. In an appearance on "The Tonight Show" to promote the new film, Hathaway admitted she considered going on in an OG Anunoby Knicks jersey to support her team.

The film opened wide May 1, where it made over $200M internationally on its opening weekend, the biggest opening of star Meryl Streep's career. The Knicks have gone 8-0 since the film hit theaters — and 11-0 since the film's final premiere in Tokyo. That's tied for the third-longest playoff win streak in NBA history.

Karl-Anthony Towns has parallels to movie character

Besides their shared appreciation for Anunoby, Towns has a lot in common with Hathaway and her character. Andy Sachs is a college standout who struggles under a tyrannical boss. Karl-Anthony Towns was a No. 1 overall pick who struggled under a tyrannical coach, Tom Thibodeau.

Both benefited from a change of scenery, like when Towns was traded from the Minnesota Timberwolves to the Knicks and Sachs donated her clothes from Paris Fashion Week to her frenemy, Emily. Thibodeau was a bad fit for Towns, just like Nate the aspiring chef was a bad match for Andy.

"Prada 2" wasn't Towns' first acting appearance. That came in 2019's "What Men Want," where Towns appears opposite Taraji P. Henson's telepathic sports agent. In a scene where Henson reads the excited and expletive-laden thoughts of a Towns superfan, Towns eventually flees to avoid the fan's father — played by Tracy Morgan, who is an even bigger Knicks fan than Hathaway.

Will the Knicks' streak continue into the Finals? It very well might, unless Shai Gilgeous-Alexander or Victor Wembanyama have a cameo in "Scary Movie." If so, all bets are off.
