Victor Wembanyama faces punishment decision for actions after Spurs' loss to Thunder

The San Antonio Spurs had a rough Game 5 against the Oklahoma City Thunder on Tuesday during the Western Conference Finals and fell 127-114. Now, this series is 3-2, and the Thunder are one game away from making it to the NBA Finals.

It's fair to say that Spurs star Victor Wembanyama had an off night against the Thunder. It happens. During the game, he recorded 20 points, six rebounds, one assist, three blocks and two steals, which wasn't nearly enough to get the Spurs over the finish line.

After the game, Wembanyama was understandably upset. But now a move that he made following the loss may result in punishment from the NBA.

Victor Wembanyama was warned by the NBA after Game 5 actions

After the game, a team spokesman said that Wembanyama wouldn't be available to speak with reporters. This seems like a little thing, but it's actually against NBA policy for players to avoid talking to the press after a game. They have to be available to speak with the media after every game.

Sam Amick of The Athletic called it "skirting media obligations."

"Per a league official, the NBA has warned Wembanyama over his decision not to fulfill media obligations after Game 5, though he was not fined," Amick added in a Wednesday report about the incident.

Amick also notes that the move was a "serious break from the league's norm for its star players and Wembanyama's typical media decorum."

Following the game, Spurs coach Mitch Johnson was critical of the star, stating, "He's got to take more than 15 shots. Even with the [12] free throws, he's going to have to score more than 20 points for sure."

Considering that Wembanyama is usually very media-friendly and was even voted the most media-friendly player in the game by the Professional Basketball Writers Association, it's possible the NBA just looks the other way in this case. Understandably, Wembanyama was frustrated after the Spurs' loss and just wasn't in the mood to talk to the press.
