Cubs make impressive MLB history with 10th straight loss

Each season across all professional sports, there are history making performances by teams and players. While most of those are good, bad history is made as well

For the Chicago Cubs, a 10th straight loss on Tuesday put them in the category of not good, not bad, but impressive history.

Cubs make history with 10th straight loss

A 12-1 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday gave Chicago its 10th consecutive loss. It's not the first time the Cubs have seen the number 10 involved in a streak this season.

The Cubs already have a pair of 10-game winning streaks this season. Those streaks came in a stretch between April 14 to May 8 during which they posted an overall record of 20-3.

With the loss on Tuesday, the Cubs became the first team in MLB history to have multiple 10-game winning streaks and a 10-game losing streak within the first two months of the season.

The feat itself has only happened one other time in the expansion era, in the summer of the 2017 season for the Los Angeles Dodgers.

There is a silver lining

While it all seems bad and like the Cubs may never win again for many fans, there is a silver lining. Four times in MLB history, teams that have lost 10 consecutive games at any point during the season ended up making the postseason.

Just last year, the Cleveland Guardians had a 10-game losing streak and ended up winning the AL Central. The aforementioned 2017 Dodgers team won 104 games and made the World Series despite their summer swoon.

When could the streak end?

Chicago has two more games in Pittsburgh on Wednesday and Thursday. A win to snap the streak on Wednesday will be important, as Paul Skenes is scheduled to take the mound for the Pirates in the series finale.

If the skid is not snapped in Pittsburgh, the Cubs will be riding a 12-game losing streak headed into a weekend series against the St. Louis Cardinals and in a rivalry series, anything can happen.
