The Pittsburgh Steelers are back with quarterback Aaron Rodgers for another season, but this season won't be like the last. This time around, the Steelers have former Dallas Cowboys and Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy running the show, and his strong ties to Rodgers may be just what this franchise needs for a Super Bowl run.
Rodgers and McCarthy worked together for more than a decade, from 2006-18, when they were both with the Packers. During their 13 seasons together, they went to the playoffs nine times and won Super Bowl XLV. Rodgers also won two MVP awards during his time with McCarthy. There's no reason this kind of magic can't make its way to Pittsburgh this season.
Don't just take it from this writer. In an interview with Peter Schwartz, Super Bowl champion quarterback Joe Theismann talked about how having Rodgers back with McCarthy will help the Steelers.
“I really had no doubt that he would be back with Mike McCarthy... Aaron doesn't have to learn a new system," Theismann said.. "He basically is a coach on the field. He's going to help everybody else in this particular system that they're going to run."
The thing that the Steelers have to do is be able to protect him. You give Aaron a chance to be able to look at a defense, to get the ball out of his hands, he's going to carve people up. Last year, he had to run for his life a lot. This year, I think they've really tried to fix the offensive line."
It's safe to say that one of the reasons the Steelers hired McCarthy was with the idea that Rodgers would be back. You can't cultivate this kind of chemistry. It's been a long time since the Steelers have been this close to a Super Bowl run, now that they have both Rodgers and McCarthy in the fold.
