Current Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Cooper Kupp and retired defensive superstar Aaron Donald were teammates with the Los Angeles Rams from 2017 up until Donald retired following the 2023 season.
Thus, it's understandable that Kupp had a strong reaction during a Wednesday appearance on "The Rich Eisen Show" when asked about Donald possibly coming out of retirement to return to the Rams after his former club acquired star pass-rusher Myles Garrett from the Cleveland Browns on Monday.
"I already texted him and told him he’s not allowed (to come back)," Kupp explained, per Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk. "So we’re good. I texted Aaron and said, 'Don’t even think about it.' I left it at that, so we’re good. I’m not worried about it. I already nipped it in the bud. No one has to worry."
Unfortunately for Kupp and his Seattle teammates, it seems like Donald is at least thinking about making a return to the Rams' active roster. Pat McAfee previously revealed that Donald said via a text message that he wanted to see "if that fire can light back up." Also on Wednesday, Rams general manager Les Snead suggested that Donald is having second thoughts about staying retired "for the first time" since the future Hall of Famer initially announced his decision.
Donald turned 35 years old in May, and he would have to shake off any rust that has accumulated since he last played in a meaningful game. That said, being able to play alongside a two-time Defensive Player of the Year who is still in his prime likely would make things somewhat easier for Donald on game days.
"I don’t know what’s gonna happen," Kupp added during the segment. "I love Aaron. He’s such a good football player, great dude. I loved taking the field with him in L.A. I don’t know what’s going to happen. That would be crazy. He’s a very, very good football player. I don’t care how old he is, how long he’s not played, Aaron Donald is Aaron Donald. But it doesn’t matter because I told him he can’t."
It remains to be seen if Donald will listen to Kupp through the summer months.
